Kangaroos squeak by Ichabods in WU's final exhibition

KANSAS CITY, Mo - The Ichabods got within three points in the final minute of their exhibition at Missouri-Kansas City, but the Kangaroos pulled away for a 79-75 win in Washburn's final preseason tuneup at Municipal Auditorium. The Ichabods will open the regular season with another NCAA Division I opponent when they play at No. 4 Kansas Thursday.

Andrew Meile was 7 of 12 from the field to lead the 'Bods with 19 points and Paul Byers and Darnell Kimble reached double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Kyle Snyder led the team with seven rebounds and Meile, Mario Scott and James Williams each had four assists.

Washburn was down by seven, 75-68 at the 1:15 mark when Meile hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to four. The Ichabods got within three when Kimble tipped in a rebound of Scott's shot with 23 seconds remaining. The Ichabods had to foul on UMKC's next two possesions, allowing the Kangaroos to build a six-point lead from the free throw line and then Nate Daniel's shot in the final seconds made it a four-point game.

The Ichabods shot 45 percent from the field and were 11 of 28 from 3-point range to shoot 39 percent. They were 10 of 12 from the free throw line (83 percent). UMKC shot 52 percent on the night. The Ichabods dominated on the boards, 36-25 but the Kangaroos were able to win the turnover battle, 13-17.

Washburn got on the board first when Kimble converted a three-point play on a layup and a free throw 29 seconds into the game. The Ichabods then got a new-fashioned three-point play when Byers hit a 3 on the next possesion to give the 'Bods a 6-2 lead.

The Kangaroos jumped back into the game and took the lead at 8-6 and then after building the lead as high as seven points, the Ichabods came back to tie the score at 24-24 on a lay up by Kimble. UMKC answered with a basket but then a three-point play by Grant Hargett gave WU a brief lead.

UMKC looked to go into the locker room with a six-point lead but Meile hit a 3 in the final seconds to make the score 36-33 at the break.

Washburn shot 50 percent in the first half making 12 of 24 shots from the field. The Ichabods were 4 of 11 from 3-point range with Meile hitting a pair from outside.

Washburn led by a point at the 3:06 mark of the first period and had the score tied at 5:27 of the second half.
