KEARNEY, Neb. -- The Washburn Lady Blues season came to an end in a double overtime loss to No. 3 South Dakota in the NCAA Elite Eight national quarterfinals in an 85-80 defeat. Washburn ends the season in their fifth Elite Eight in school history with a 26-7 record while South Dakota, 32-1, moves on to face No. 1 ranked and undefeated Delta State on Thursday night.
At the end of regulation, the teams had encountered 11 ties with Washburn and South Dakota entering the first extra session knotted at 63. In the first overtime, Washburn never led after the Coyotes jumped out to a three point lead on two different occasions and Corkey Stiger was able to tie the score each time. WIth Washburn trailing 73-70, Jessica Mainz hit a three with 28 seconds left tying the score for the 14th time in the game. South Dakota had the final possession and after a timeout, Jeana Hoffman drove the lane with three seconds left, but her potential game-winning shot was rejected by Amanda Holmes keeping the score tied at 73 forcing the second overtime.
In the second overtime, Washburn never took the lead and neither team would score until there were 2:27 left in the period. Washburn tied the score at 75 on a pair of Holmes free throws with 2:14 remaining. South Dakota stretched the lead to four at 79-75. Washburn sliced the lead to two at 79-77 on a couple of Janice Bright free throws, but the Lady Blues would get no closer as the Coyotes hit all six free throw attempts in the final 13 seconds securing the win.
Washburn took their biggest lead of the game at six points at 16-10 with 12:12 left in the first half, but the Coyotes responded with a 16-2 run over the next 7:30 to take at 26-20 lead. South Dakota would stretch the lead to 10 at 31-21 before the Lady Blues before Washburn cut the lead to seven at the break 33-26.
To open the second half, Washburn again built a lead of six points at 41-35 coming out of the locker room after going on a 15-2 run.
With 20 seconds to play in regulation and the Coyotes hanging on to a 61-57 lead, Stiger was fouled attempting a 3-pointer. Stiger would hit all three charity tosses to cut the lead to one with 20 seconds to play. Washburn fouled and South Dakota hit both free throws to take a three point lead at 63-60 with 19 seconds to play. Again Stiger connected on a long-range 3-pointer to tie the score for the 11th time in regulation.
Stiger finished with a career-high tying 31 points matching her total from the regional final in the win over Emporia State. Stiger hit 10 of 28 attempts from the field and 8 of 19 3-point attempts playing 49 minutes of the game.
Janice Bright scored 16 points to go along with eight rebounds. Amanda Holmes recorded her 18th career double double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Jessica Mainz recorded a career-high 11 rebounds playing 47 minutes in the game.
South Dakota was led by Jeana Hoffman's 27 points. She led four Coyotes in double figures while South Dakota won their 30th straight game this season.
Washburn shot 37 percent for the game hitting 25 of 68 attempts from the field while the Coyotes hit 28 of 65 shots from the field.
Washburn was 18 of 25 from the free throw line while the Coyotes were 22 of 30, but also hit 12 of 14 from the free throw line in the two overtime periods.
The Lady Blues won the battle on the boards 56 to 35.

* Corkey Stiger hit her 95th 3-pointer of the season setting a new Washburn single-season record snapping the previous record of 92 set by Brooke Ubelaker during the 2006-07 season.
* Stiger's 605 points is the fifth-highest single season total in school history.
* Stiger's 18.3 points per game averaging this season as the 10th highest in school history.
* Stiger finished with a school-record 269 3-point attempts this season.
* Amanda Holmes' 406 points this season is the 35th highest single season total in school history.
* Holmes finished her three-year career at Washburn with 974 points. She averaged 9.8 points per game and 6.6 rebounds per game playing 99 games at Washburn while starting 72.
* Holmes' 268 rebounds this season were the fifth-highest single season total in school history.
* Holmes' 49 blocked shots this season were the third highest single-season total in school history. She finished her career with 120 blocked shots which is second on the all-time chart.
* Jessica Mainz played 1,121 minutes this season, which is the most by any player in one season. Number two on the chart is Shelley Foster's 1,040 minutes played during the 1994-95 season. Mainz averaged 34 minutes per game this season.
*Stiger's 1,030 minutes this season were the fourth highest all-time.
* The 28 field goal attempts by Stiger against South Dakota were the most in school history.
* The eight 3-pointers were the most by Stiger were the most in NCAA Tournament history by a Lady Blue and the second highest total in any game by a Lady Blue trailing only Erin Menard's school-record 10 against Truman on Jan. 17, 2004.
