Ichabods shut out St. Cloud State to advance to NCAA second round

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The 27th-ranked Ichabods swept the three doubles matches and then quickly won three singles matches to clinch a 6-0 victory against St. Cloud State in the first round of the NCAA North Central Region tournament. Washburn will take on either host school Northwest Missouri State or Emporia State Friday at 1:30 p.m. for a chance to advance to the national tournament in Houston, Texas.
Washburn’s No. 1 doubles team of Rutger Vliegenberg and Andrew Plum beat the Huskies’ No. 1 team 8-2 while No. 2 doubles partners Nathan Martin and Brad Johnston won 8-1. Ryan Ward and Drew Hanson stretched out their victory to a 9-7 decision at No. 3 doubles.
In singles Plum won easily, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5 singles and then Hanson won at No. 4 by the same scores to clinch the five points needed for victory. Ward also got his result in, a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.
No. 1 Vliegenberg, No. 3 Martin and No. 6 Johnston did not finish their matches.
