TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn Athletics Director Loren Ferré has announced Jill McCartney has been hired as Washburn's Assistant Athletics Director and senior women's administrator overseeing the athletic department's compliance program. McCartney comes to Washburn from Metro State in Denver where she served Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Academic Services since November 2007. Her first day on campus will be Aug. 3. McCartney replaces former Janet Degginger who retired last month.
"We are excited to have Jill join the Washburn family," Ferré said. "She has an outstanding reputation in the compliance arena and she is highly thought off by her peers in the Rocky Mountain Conference and in NCAA Division II."
At Metro State, McCartney was responsible for ensuring that the entire athletic program is in compliance with NCAA and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rules and regulations. She was the liaison between the athletic department and the college's faculty and oversaw the academic progress of student-athletes. In addition, McCartney oversaw the swimming and diving and cheerleading programs, assisted the athletic director with all aspects of the athletic department and worked with the department's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
"I'm really excited to join Washburn and be a part of such a successful program, McCartney said. "Washburn teams have a reputation of being competitive nationally, and they're known for building their programs on character and integrity. I'm very much looking forward to getting to know
the student-athletes, coaches, and staff there--especially as fall sports are just around the corner."
Prior to coming to Metro State, McCartney was the head women's soccer coach and an assistant professor of English at Southwest Minnesota State University from 1998-2007. In addition to her head coaching responsibilities, she taught courses in American literature and composition. While at SMSU, McCartney served as a faculty mentor and on numerous committees, and was also an active member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). McCartney, who received her PhD in Education from Capella University in 2008, also was an assistant soccer coach and graduate assistant teacher of English at Arizona and the head soccer coach at Marquette during her career.
McCartney received her master's degree in English Literature from Arizona, as well as a bachelor's degree in English from North Carolina. McCartney and her husband, Bob, reside in Denver.
