WICHITA, Kan. -- Washburn Lady Blues softball coach Lisa Carey will be inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in Wichita, Kan. in ceremonies on Oct. 3. Carey recently finished her eighth season at Washburn.
Carey, who is Washburn's all-time wins leader in the Lady Blues' dugout, has compiled a 237-191 record. Carey was a three-time All-American selection at Oklahoma leading the Sooners to the 2000 national championship and was named the Big 12 player of the year that same season after leading the Sooners in batting with a .405 average. She also led the team with 90 hits, 20 home runs, 77 RBI, a .779 slugging percentage and 173 total bases. Prior to going to Oklahoma, Carey was standout at Washburn Rural going 48-3 with a 0.31 ERA and 130 strikeouts during her career. In her four seasons as a Junior Blue, Carey helped Washburn Rural to an 87-4 record.
The class of inductees, announced Tuesday by the KSHOF Board of Trustees and President/CEO Ted Hayes, features seven men and four women. It will also mark first-time inductions for a volleyball coach, softball player, weightlifter and rower.
Three individuals – former baseball great 'Smoky' Joe Wood and U.S. Olympic coaches Richard Quick and Gerald Tucker – will be inducted posthumously. Joining Wood, Quick and Tucker in the KSHOF Class of 2010 will be NCAA softball All-American Lisa Carey; Olympic gold medal weightlifter Tara Nott Cunningham; two-time Olympic rower Anna Seaton Huntington; Wichita State golf coach and former PGA pro Grier Jones; University of Kansas football great Willie Pless; former major league baseball pitchers Steve Renko and Ray Sadecki, and former Lawrence High volleyball coach Joan Wells.
