Washburn head coach
Chris Herron announced the signing of seven high school seniors to national letters of intent during the early signing period that ended last week. The list includes four Kansas players and one each from Missouri, Nebraska and Illinois.
Herron signed three liberos; Kylie Miller form Holton, Kan., and Holton High School; Jamie Pfannenstiel from Silver Lake, Kan., and Silver Lake High School; and Callie Lowry from Ozark, Mo., and Ozark High School. Two middle hitters, Rebecca Maasen from Lenexa, Kan., and De Soto High School and Hannah Frierdich from Edwardsville, Ill., also signed. Dani Musselman, the lone Topeka signee, signed as an outside hitter from Washburn Rural and Megan Stroyek from Papillion, Neb., and Papillion-La Vista South High School signed as a rightside hitter.
Stroyek's team went 82-0 in her final two years, winning a pair of state titles and the No. 1 ranking by ESPN FAB50 and MaxPreps. Musselman earned all-state last year and she's on the Under Armour All-America watch list this year. Miller and Pfannenstiel also have earned all-state in their careers and Frierdich holds every blocking average record in her school's history. Maasen was leading her school in kills, blocks and digs as of signing date and Lowry was an AVCA academic All-American at her school.
Herron's Lady Blues went 32-3 this year and shared the MIAA title with a 17-1 record. They made their eighth straight trip to the NCAA tournament last week and finished as South Central Region runner-up.
Megan Stroyek - 5-11 – RH - Papillion, Neb. - Papillion-La Vista South High School
A four-year letter winner and starter her last three years...her team won state titles in 2011 and 2010 and was voted the No. 1 team in the nation in 2010 by ESPN FAB50 and MaxPreps...her teams had identical 41-0 records those years...finished as state runners-up in 2008 and 2009...earned all-Metro Conference honorable mention her junior year...also earned Award of Academic Excellence her junior year and she's a National Honor Society member.
Rebecca Maasen - 5-10 – MH - Lenexa, Kan. - De Soto High School
She was leading her team in kills, blocks and digs as of signing date...her junior year she was first team all-league and all-area and led her team in kills...her sophomore year she led her team in kills, digs and blocks and earned all-league honorable mention...her freshman year she led the team in kills and blocks and also earned all-league honorable mention...carrying a 4.04 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society and her schools A honor roll.
Dani Musselman - 5-10 – OH - Topeka, Kan. - Washburn Rural High School
She is on the Under Armour All-America watch list in her senior year with the Junior Blues...her junior year she was all-state, all-Centennial League and all-city first team...her sophomore year she was all-league and all-city first team as well as newcomer of the year.
Kylie Miller - 5-10 – L - Holton, Kan. - Holton High School
She's currently playing her senior year with the Wildcats...her junior year she earned all-state class 4A honorable mention and Big 7 all-league honor...also earned all-league her sophomore year and lettered her freshman year...she is currently second in kills at Holton and first in service aces...she lettered in basketball her first three years and her team advanced to state tournament all three years...earned all-state honorable mention playing basketball her junior year...a member of the National Honor Society, a student council member for four years and the yearbook editor...her brother, Marty Pfannenstiel is a senior on the Washburn football team.
Jamie Pfannenstiel - 5-6 – L - Silver Lake, Kan. - Silver Lake High School
She earned all-state class 3A her junior year for the Eagles...earned all-league her junior and sophomore years...also has letters in softball and basketball earning all-league in basketbal lher junior year and all-league in softball her sophomre and freshman year...earned all-class 3A honorable mention in softball her freshman year.
Callie Lowry - 5-3 – L - Ozark, Mo. - Ozark High School
Playing her senior year for the Tigers...her junior year she was an AVCA academic All-American...her team earned third place in the Missouri Class 4 state tournament...she currently holds a 4.3 GPA and is an honor roll student.
Hannah Frierdich - 6-0 – MH - Edwardsville, Ill. - Edwardsville High School
Her senior year the Tigers were sectional, regional and Southwestern Illinois Conference champions...holds every career blocking average record in school history and set a single-season record with 74 solo blocks her senior year...her team finished third in the 4A state tournament her junior year...played her first competitive volleyball her sophomore year and helped her team to a conference championship as a varsity starter...her freshman and sophomore years she played basketball and helped her team to sectional titles...a four-year honor roll student and National Honors Society member.
