Lady Blues look to sweep Lady Hornets as final week begins
The 15th-ranked Lady Blues will enter the final week of the regular season looking for a season sweep over Emporia State Wednesday in their 5:30 p.m. Turnpike Tussle game. The game will be carried on the radio on Country Legends 106.9 FM KTPK. Links to live video, audio and statistics can be found on wusports.com.

Washburn is 23-4 overall and 16-2 in the MIAA after a 59-45 win against first-place Pittsburg State Saturday. The Lady Blues are half a game behind the Gorillas (17-2) in the standings and can clinch at least a share of the MIAA title with two wins this week. PSU has just one game remaining.

The Lady Hornets are 18-6 overall and third in the league with a 13-5 record. They beat Lincoln 62-57 Saturday.

Washburn senior guard Stevi Schultz will enter the game two points away from her 1000th and she will become the 21st player in Lady Blues history to reach that plateau.

Washburn is 41-43 all-time against the Lady Hornets and this will be the 85th meeting in the series. The Lady Blues won in Topeka, 73-66 on January 14.

Last Time Out: Washburn 59, Pittsburg State 45
TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 15 Washburn jumped out to a 16-0 lead and went on to beat No. 8 Pittsburg State 59-45 Saturday afternoon in Lee Arena in the MIAA Game of the Week.

The Lady Blues improved to 23-4 overall and drew even with the Gorillas in the loss column for first in the MIAA with a 16-2 record. The Gorillas fell to 23-3 overall and 17-2 in the MIAA. PSU leads the MIAA by half a game with one game to play. Washburn has two games left including at Emporia State Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and at home Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against Lincoln in Senior Day. Two wins would give Washburn at least of share of the title.

Stevi Schultz led Washburn with 15 points and came within two points of reaching 1,000 in her career. She went 6 of 9 from the field with three 3-pointers and came one rebound shy of a double-double with a team-high nine. Sierra Moeller also had nine boards and scored eight points.

Cassie Lombardino scored 13 points off 4 of 10 shooting and Ebonie Williams scored 12 points with seven rebounds.

Williams opened the game with a 3-pointer and then Schultz hit three straight from behind the arc to make the score 12-0. After a Lombardino free throw, Williams hit a 3 to give Washburn a 16-0 lead. Brooke Conley finally got the Gorillas, winners of nine straight MIAA games since losing to Washburn on January 11, on the board with a 3-pointer at 14:49.

The lead dipped into single digits just once in the first half and Washburn led by 11, 30-19 at halftime.

Pitt State opened the second half on a 7-2 run to get within six and then got within four at the 15:17 mark on a lay-up from Conley. An 8-2 run later gave Washburn a 49-38 lead with 4:10 to play.

PSU got Washburn's lead to six with 2:37 to go but the Lady Blues scored the final eight points after that with four points each from Schultz and Elliott to give Washburn the win.

Washburn shot 37 percent in the game but kept PSU to 27 percent shooting. Washburn made 5 of 17 3-pointers while the Gorillas made just 3 of 15. Washburn won the rebound battle 50-31 but committed 13 turnovers while the Gorillas had just seven.

Laura Kinderknecht led Washburn with five assists and Moeller blocked two shots. Lizzy Jeronimus led the Gorillas with 19 points and Conley scored 14.

Schultz 2 points from 1,000 club
Stevi Schultz has 998 career points in her four years at Washburn and she needs two more to join the 1,000 point club. She would become the 21st Lady Blue to reach 1,000 career points. Corkey Stiger was the last to reach that milestone, scoring 1,047 in two seasons from 2006-08.

Schultz will be looking for her 1000th career point Wednesday at Emporia State. Last year in Emporia she scored 12 points off 4 of 8 shooting.

Schultz also needs two 3-pointers to give her 200 in her career. She has 198 right now and is second in school history. Brooke Ubelaker is the only player to go over 200 3-pointers with 236 in her career.
Schultz will also be looking for her 50th double-figure scoring game. She's scored 10 or more in 49 of her 108 games played in her four years.

Lady Blues enter final week two wins from clinching 8th MIAA title
The Lady Blues will clinch at least a share of the MIAA title with wins over ESU Wednesday and Lincoln Saturday in the regular season finales. Washburn is 16-2, half a game behind Pittsburg State at 17-2. The Gorillas wrap up their MIAA schedule Wednesday at FHSU and a win would force Washburn to win twice to share the title. If the Gorillas lose then two Washburn wins would give the Lady Blues the title outright and one win would split the title.

Washburn will be either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the MIAA tournament and play either No. 8 or No. 7 in the first round March 1. If WU ties PSU, then the Lady Blues hold the tie-breaker with the season sweep.

The Lady Blues have won seven MIAA regular season titles, the last in 2009-10. They have seven conference titles overall counting four Central States Intercollegiate Conference championships.

Lady Blues third in first set of NCAA regional rankings
The Lady Blues were picked third in the first NCAA South Central Region ranking released February 15.
Washburn, ranked 15th in the nation, entered last week with a 15-4 record in the region and was 21-4 overall. Pittsburg State is No. 1 in the region but has now lost to Washburn twice. Northeastern State, an independent this year and future MIAA opponent next year, is No. 2 in the region. MIAA opponent Emporia State is No. 6 and Central Missouri is No. 7.

The South Central Region is made up of teams from the MIAA, Lone Star Conference, Heartland Conference and Great American Conference. The winners of the MIAA, LSC and Heartland get automatic bids to the eight-team NCAA South Central Region tournament and the remaining five seeds are filled by at-large bids based on the NCAA ranking. The newly-formed GAC does not have an automatic bid yet.

The South Central Region tournament runs March 9-12 at the site of the top seed that is eligible to host. The winners of all eight regionals will meet at the NCAA II Elite Eight, March 20-23 in San Antonio, Texas.

Lady Blues move from ninth to 15th in national poll
The Lady Blues dropped six spots to 15th in the USA Today ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll released February 14. Washburn went 1-1 the previous week after climbing to a season-high ninth in the February 7 poll.

The Lady Blues have been ranked in all 12 polls this year. They were left out of the final poll last year but have been ranked in 152 of the last 153 polls, dating back to week three of the 2002-03 season.

Washburn earns 11th straight 20-win season
Washburn's 75-55 win February 4 against FHSU was the 20th of the season, giving the Lady Blues their 11th straight 20-win season. The Lady Blues last failed to reach at least 20 wins in 2000-01, head coach Ron McHenry's first year. During that streak, Washburn has had three 30-win seasons.

Overall, Washburn has had 22 seasons with 20 wins or more and five of them have yielded at least 30 wins. Washburn's record for wins in a year is 35 in 2004-05, the national title year.

MIAA coaches and media pick Lady Blues first
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Lady Blues were picked as the team to beat in the MIAA's coaches and media preseason polls released during the MIAA Virtual Media Day. Washburn was a unanimous pick in the coaches poll and earned 12 of 16 first place votes in the media poll.

The Lady Blues, second-place finishers last year with a 22-7 overall record and a 17-5 MIAA mark, were picked in front of Emporia State in both polls. Defending regular season and tournament champion Northwest Missouri was picked third in the media poll and tied for fifth in the coaches poll.

Lady Blues lead nation in 3-point shooting; near top of several other NCAA statistical categories
The Lady Blues are in the top 22 of nine different statistical categories in the February 16 NCAA report. Washburn ranks first in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (.401) and is in the top 10 in rebound margin (+11.2), scoring margin (+19.1), field goal percentage (.466) and assist/turnover ration. The Lady Blues are in the top 22 in assists per game, field goal percentage defense and scoring offense and defense.

The Lady Blues rank highly in rebounds because they have only been out-rebounded four times this year. Their shooting percentages are helped by the fact that they've shot 50 percent or better from the field eight times and 45 percent or better from long range nine times. They have only allowed opponents to shoot 40 percent or better twice this year.

Williams leads nation in 3-point shooting
Ebonie Williams moved to first in the nation in 3-point shooting percentage with a .536 mark in the February 16 report. She was unranked in previous reports because she hadn't been averaging the minimum 2.0 makes per game. Williams went 2 of 6 Saturday, after the report came out, and now is shooting .505 from long range. She is averaging exactly 2.0 makes a game.

Schultz takes over 2nd in career 3-pointers at Washburn
Senior guard Stevi Schultz is second in school history, now with 198 3-pointers in her career. Earlier this year she passed Lora Westling, who had 144 from 2001-05. Brooke Ubelaker (2003-07) is the career leader with 236 at WU. Two more makes would make her only the second person in school history to reach 200 3-pointers.

This year she's shooting a career-high 38 percent from 3-point range. Schultz' 82 3-pointers last year was the fourth-highest single-season total in school history.

Lombardino moves to fourth in career blocks
Senior Cassie Lombardino blocked her 101st career shot February 15 at Missouri Southern to move into a tie with Laura Mueller (1988-92) for fourth in Washburn history. Lombardino's 41 blocks this year is the ninth highest single-season total at Washburn. Her 49 blocks last year tied for the third highest season total. Sixty blocks is the Washburn single-season record (Brenda Shaffer-Dahl in 1988-89).

Her next block will move her to fourth all alone and she needs to reach 116 to catch Jannica Beam (1989-93) for third in Washburn history.

McHenry reaches milestone 300th win
Ron McHenry began his 12th season with the Lady Blues in 2011-12 and his 87-63 win on December 17 against Missouri Western gave him the 300th win in his career, all at WU. McHenry now has a 313-64 (.830) record.

McHenry entered the season second in NCAA Division II history with an .829 winning percentage (among coaches with at least 10 years) and second among active coaches in winning percentage (among coaches with at least five years). Thirty-six active DII coaches had reached the 300-win level and McHenry became the 37th. Among coaches who have at least 300 wins, only Lloyd Clark (Delta State 1984-2002) has a betting winning percentage (.834).

McHenry has had at least 23 wins in every year but his first. He's reached the 30-win mark three times. After a 13-14 record in his first season, 2000-01, McHenry has brought the Lady Blues to the NCAA tournament 10 straight times.

McHenry, a national champion in 2004-05, is the Washburn career leader in winning percentage among the five coaches since the program started in 1969-70. He is second in career wins at WU behind Patty Dick with 431 from 1977-00.

Williams' two-school career closing with huge numbers
Senior guard Ebonie Williams scored her 1,500th career point February 11 against SBU and now has 1,537 in her four-year college career. She has 414 points this year and she scored 1,123 points in her three previous years at Seton Hall. She is averaging 13.3 points a game in her four years.

Williams' .530 shooting percentage this year is a career high. She had never shot better than .419 at Seton Hall. Her 15.3 points a game is also a career high. Her sophomore year in 2008-09 she shot .419 and averaged 13.2 points a game to earn second team all-Big East honor.

Keeping them under 40
The Lady Blues kept their first 13 opponents to under 40 percent shooting and so far this year, Central Missouri has been the only team to top 40 percent shooting against Washburn. The Jennies shot .469 on December 31 and then shot .450 on February 8. Washburn is keeping opponents to .340 shooting overall and .331 shooting in every game but the UCM contests. Washburn is allowing MIAA opponents to shoot .356 overall.

Season Flash Backs: Don't Forget...
Four in a row over 50: The Lady Blues topped the 50 percent mark in field goal shooting in four straight games, all MIAA contests, from December 10 to January 3. They averaged a .562 field goal percentage during that stretch.
Keeping 'em under 40: The Lady Blues kept their first 13 opponents to under 40 percent shooting. Central Missouri's .469 effort on December 31 was the first to top 40 percent. Prior to that game, teams were shooting just 32 percent against Washburn. The Jennies topped 40 percent again on February 8 and are still the only team to do so.
300th win for McHenry:  Lady Blues coach Ron McHenry got his 300th career win, all at Washburn, on December 17 against Missouri Western.
Last-second heartbreakers: Sierra Moeller tied the game December 10 against Truman with 29 seconds left but Bulldog Megan Sharpe made a jumper as time expired to give TSU an upset over then-No. 15 Washburn in Lee Arena. On February 8 Ebonie Williams hit a 3-pointer with 28 seconds left to give Washburn a one-point lead but Central Missouri hit a lay-up with 4.8 seconds left to win 69-68.
400 straight under 100: The Lady Blues 67-60 win at Fort Hays State on December 7 marked the 400th straight game Washburn has kept opponents under 100 points. The last time was on January 27, 1999, at Emporia State.
School-record margin of victory: Washburn's 92-point win over Tabor on November 14 is the highest in school history. The previous largest was by 87 on November 25, 1983 to St. John's (Kan.), 113-26. This was Washburn's 11th 100-point game in school history and first since winning 102-43 to Southwestern on November 23, 2009.
Another 100-point game!: Washburn made it back-to-back 100-point games for the first time in school history with a 108-60 win over Southwestern on November 16. The Lady Blues had recorded triple-digit games twice in the same season in 2005-06 and 1983-84 but never in consecutive games.
Happiest Place on Earth: The Lady Blues went 3-0 in the season-opening Disney Tip-Off West Coast Classic to claim the trophy. Ebonie Williams earned MVP honor.
Near DI Upset: A last-second lay-up spoiled Washburn's exhibition upset bid, 52-50, at Kansas State on November 8. Ebonie Williams led WU with 15 points.

Last time out against Emporia State
TOPEKA, Kan. - The 17th-ranked Lady Blues scored first and didn't let the Lady Hornets lead at all in a 73-66 win over No. 18 Emporia State January 14 in Lee Arena.

Ebonie Williams scored 21 points off 6 of 18 shooting. She hit three 3-pointers and went 6 of 10 from the free throw line. Cassie Lombardino went 6 of 12 from the field for 13 points and Laura Kinderknecht made 8 of 8 free throws to help her to 12 points.

The Lady Blues led by double figures most of the second half but a lay-up from Kelsey Balcom made it a six-point game, 67-61, with 57 seconds remaining. Williams sunk a pair of free throws but ESU answered with a 3-pointer from Heather Robben to cut the lead to five. Washburn made four more free throws down the stretch to push it to a three-possession game and hold on for the win.

The Lady Blues shot 42 percent from the field while ESU was 37 percent. Washburn made 4 of 7 3-pointers (57 percent) and the Lady Hornets made 5 of 16 (31 percent). Washburn won the rebound battle 37-35 and committed 10 turnovers to the Lady Hornets' 12. ESU blocked seven shots while Washburn got a hand on just one.

Robben scored 27 points for the Lady Hornets, the most allowed by Washburn all year. She went 7 of 15 from the field and 11 of 11 from the free throw line. Kinderknecht became the 18th player in WU history to go perfect from the line and make at least eight.

The Lady Hornets tied the game at 8-8 at 14:11 and then Tiara George's lay-up gave Washburn the lead for good. Kinderknecht made two straight free throws at 2:37 to push it to double digits for the first time.

Lombardino's three-point play at 16:53 in the second half gave the Lady Blues a 12-point lead before the Lady Hornets pushed it to single digits one more time. A jumper from George at 7:54 gave Washburn a game-high 15-point lead. A 7-0 run soon after that brought Emporia State within seven and then Sierra Moeller's long jumper at 3:10 pushed it back to nine before the Lady Hornets climbed within five with under a minute to play.

George finished with eight points off a 4 of 5 performance under the basket. Seven of the Lady Blues' first eight baskets were in the paint and they ended the game with a 34-24 advantage on points inside.

Up next for the Lady Blues
A home game on February 25 at 1:30 p.m. against Lincoln will wrap up the regular season for Washburn.
The MIAA tournament will be March 1-4 in Kansas City, Mo., and then the NCAA South Central Region tournament will be March 9-12. The Elite Eight is March 20-23 in San Antonio, Texas.
