Ichabods swept in MIAA doubleheader by Northwest Missouri; series at PSU moved up a day

The Ichabods gave up first inning runs in both games Thursday and trailed the entire way in a doubleheader sweep against Northwest Missouri Thursday at Falley Field. Washburn fell 5-1 in the opener and 8-3 in the second game.

The Ichabods, playing for the first time in 15 days, fell to 2-5 overall and 2-5 in the MIAA. Their three-game series at Pittsburg State will start a day earlier as the two will play a doubleheader Friday at 2 p.m. and a single game Saturday at 1 p.m.

Dan Gabler started game one for Washburn and gave up just two runs through the first six innings. Washburn's batters only responded to the strong start with one run. Taylor Herrington doubled down the leftfield line to lead off the fourth inning for Washburn and then scored on a double by Brad Alberts.

That ended up being Washburn's only run and Northwest Missouri gave itself insurance in the top of the seventh with three runs.Connor Crimmins singled in the bottom of the seventh but was stranded as the game ended. He ended the game with two hits.

Gabler (0-1) ended up with the loss as he gave up four runs off nine hits through 6 1/3 innings. Northwest Missouri State totaled 11 hits while Washburn had six.

Parker Gibson helped keep Washburn in the game as he had two outfield assists. He threw out a runner at home in the fourth then made a catch in the fifth then doubled up a runner at second. Washburn ended the doubleheader with four outfield assists.

The Bearcats built a 3-0 lead in the first three innings in the second game before Washburn broke through with a run in the bottom of the third. Zack Haller walked and then later scored on a grounder by Parker Gibson.

The Ichabods scored in the fifth when David Lammers reached home on a Corey Gragg single.They scored again in the eighth when Alberts drove in Gragg on a groundout. Gragg finished with two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

Ryne Dowling started his first game at Washburn and gave up four runs off five hits in three innings as he took the loss.He walked two and struck out one. Just like in the first game, the Bearcats got 11 hits in the second game while Washburn had six once again.
