Taylor Gentry pitched a two-hitter and
Dakota Kell hit his third home run of the year as the Ichabods beat Northwest Missouri 7-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday to end a seven-game losing streak. The Bearcats took the second game, 9-0 to earn a split.
Washburn moved to 6-20 overall and 6-19 in the MIAA and will now play a three-game series this weekend at Missouri Southern. The two will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 2 p.m. and they will wrap up the series Sunday with a game at 1 p.m.
Gentry gave up a run in the first inning of the opener off a walk but he ended up going the distance in the win as he allowed just two hits and one earned run. He walked three and struck out five as he improved to 2-0.
Kell gave Gentry some run support as he went 2 for 3 with four RBI. He hit a two-run home run in the second inning to help Washburn to a four-run inning.
Brad Alberts led off and scored on the homer.
Parker Gibson later drove in two runs with a single to end scoring in that inning.
Kell got his third and fourth RBI in the third inning with a double from
Parker Gibson that scored Alberts and
Riley Price to put Washburn up 6-1. The Ichabods got one more run in the fifth on a sacrifice bunt from
Richard Swan that drove in Kell.
The Bearcats scored one more in the fifth but failed to score again as Washburn ended a seven-game losing streak and the Bearcats extended their losing streak to six games.
Washburn had 10 hits in the game with Kell, Gibson and
John Stoothoff each getting two.
The Bearcats held the Ichabods to five hits, all singles, in the second game as they suffered their first shutout of the year. Price had two hits including a two-out single in the first inning. The Ichabods loaded the bases that inning but couldn't take an early lead. Overall, they left eight runners on base.
AJ Green took the loss for Washburn as he pitched the first 3 2/3 innings. He allowed five runs off eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
