Ichabod men's basketball team to host Hornets in round 2 of Turnpike Tussle

  Opening Tip
•     The Washburn Ichabods will wrap up the regular season with two straight home games starting Saturday night when they will play host to the Emporia State Hornets on Schendel Court at Lee Arena at 7 p.m.
•    The Ichabods (13-15, 8-9 MIAA) had their two-game winning streak snapped in a loss at Fort Hays State 87-79.
•     The Hornets (11-15, 4-13 MIAA) have lost their last four games and they are coming off a 69-63 loss at Nebraska-Kearney.
•    The Hornets won the first meeting 62-59 after Jay Temaat hit a 30-foot bomb at the buzzer for the win. 
•    The Hornets are 3-9 on the road this season and 1-8 in MIAA road games.
•    In the MIAA standings, Central Missouri, Northwest Missouri and Pittsburg State sit atop the standings with 12-4 records. 
•    Lindenwood is in fourth at 11-6 and Nebraska-Kearney is fifth at 10-6.
•    Fort Hays State, Central Oklahoma  and Fort Hays State are all tied for sixth with 9-7 marks and Washburn sits in ninth at 8-9. Missouri Western is in tenth at 7-9. Southwest Baptist is in 11th at 6-10 and Northeastern State is in 12th at 4-12. Emporia State is in 13th at 4-13. Lincoln at 1-16 rounds out the league standings.
•    Kyle Wiggins became the 22nd person to go over the 1,000-point mark for his career against the Mules  and he now has 1,191 points in four years … his point total is 12th all-time at Washburn … next on the chart is Jemi Johnson who scored 1,215 points in three years from 1992-95.
•    Kyle Wiggins went over the 100 career 3-point mark against Fort Hays State … he ranks 10th overall in 3-pointers at Washburn with 113.
•    Alex North became the 23rd Ichabod to reach 1,000 for his career against Fort Hays State and he enters the game with the ESU with 1,044 points which is 18th all-time at Washburn.
•    With Kyle Wiggins and Alex North going over the 1,000-point mark in a career it marked the first time Washburn had two different players go over the 1,000-point mark in the same season.
•    The Ichabods will wrap up the regular season with Pittsburg State at home on Feb. 28. The MIAA Tournament starts its first round games on campus sites on March 2 and the tournament continues in Kansas City on March 5. 
•    The Ichabods have 30 regular season games scheduled this season and also had three exhibition games against NCAA Division I members Kansas, Kansas State and Oklahoma to have 33 games before the MIAA Tournament starts.
•    The Ichabods have used 14 different starting line ups this season.
    
 Bod Notes
•    Alex North has recorded 15 double doubles in his career at Washburn with his last one coming against Northeastern State on Jan. 24 … he scored his 1,000th career point against Fort Hays State and has played in 114 games with 81 starts … he went over the 650-rebound mark for his career against Emporia State … he has 1,044 career points averaging 9.2 ppg in his career and 6.0 rpg at Washburn … his 116 career 3-pointers at Washburn are ninth all-time … his 681 career rebounds are fifth all-time at Washburn … he has reached double figure scoring in 48 games as an Ichabod … he also ranks seventh in minutes played (2,839), 16th in free throws made (238), tied for eighth in games started (81), 23rd in steals (80) and 28th in assists (193) as an Ichabod … he is one of 10 Ichabods to have recorded at least 1,000 points and 500 rebounds and with seven more assists he would become the eight Ichabod to record 1,000 points and 200 assists.
•    Kyle Wiggins has averaged 10.6 ppg in 114 games making 72 starts … he went over the 1,000-point mark against Central Missouri … he also has gone over the 250-rebound mark against Northeastern State and for his career and has 259 and he went over the 200-assist mark in Hawaii and has 248 for his career … his 1,208 career points is 12th all-time at Washburn … he became just the seventh Ichabod to record at least 1,000 points and have 200 assists in a career.
•    Ichabod junior Christian Ulsaker is averaging 6.7 points with 3.8 rebounds a game this season … he recorded his first career double double against Peru State with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
•    The Ichabods have hit at least one 3-pointer in 338 games … the last game the Ichabods did not hit a 3-pointer was Dec. 30, 2003 at Missouri Western … the Ichabods have not in a 3-pointer in only five games since the 3-point line came into existence prior to the 1986-87 season - a total of 876 of 881 games played.
•    Algie Key had a season-high 25 points in the loss at Nebraska-Kearney adding three assists and three steals in 33 minutes … he hit a season-high 11 of 14 free throw attempts against Emporia State  in the first meeting … he is averaging 9.1 points and 3.8 rebounds a game this season … he had a career-high eight assists last time out at Fort Hays State.
•    Turon Parker is scoring 5.5 ppg this season adding 42 assists and 19 steals in his first season as an Ichabod … he had a season-high eight rebounds against Tabor.
•    Kevin House leads the team with 58 assists this season while adding 5.3 points and 1.9 rebounds per game … he is 48 of 57 from the free throw line this season for a team-high 84 percent and had a career-high 16 points against Northeastern State out on Feb. 14.
•    Jeremy Lickteig scored a career-high 19 points against Northwest Indian College going 9 of 10 from the field … he made his first career start against BYU-Hawaii … he tied a career-high with four rebounds against FHSU last time out.
•    The Ichabods are 188 of 539 from 3-point range this season with Kyle Wiggins hitting a team-high 46 of 109 attempts for a 42 percent average … Alex North has hit 30 of 92 attempts and Andy Wilson has hit 27 of 75 attempts … Ichabod opponents are 225 of 582 from 3-point range this season.
•    Brady Skeens recorded a season-high 14 points in his second game of the season against Tabor after having his planned redshirt pulled prior to the Rockhurst game and recorded a season-high four blocks against Central Oklahoma.
•    David Salach has started 10 games this season has averaged 3.6 rebounds a game this season and he is averaging 3.9 rebounds per game in MIAA play … he had a career-high 13 points against Central Oklahoma hitting six field goals.
•    Washburn is 403 of 599 from the free throw line for a 67 percent average while its opponents are 427 of 590 hitting 72 percent of their charity stripe attempts … in MIAA play the Ichabods have improved to 256 of 363 from the line for a 71 percent average while opponents are 247 of 340 in MIAA play for a 73 percent average.
•    Washburn is +1.8 in rebounding margin and have been outrebounded in 10 games this season.
•    The Ichabods have outscored their opponents 915 to 836 in the first half of games, but have been outscored 1103 to 1082 in the second half of games.

Emporia State head basketball coach Shaun Vandiver

 Last Time Out For The Ichabods
FOrt Hays State 87, Washburn 79 • Feb. 18, 2015
HAYS, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods ran into a 3-point shooting machine as the Fort Hays State Tigers hit nine first half 3-pointers and added six more in the second half as the Ichabods fell 87-79 in Hays in a game which saw 21 lead changes and 21 ties. 
In the first half, the Tigers hit 9 of 12 3-point attempts as they jumped out to a 40-37 lead at the break. Washburn was 5 of 13 in the opening half. Overall nine of the Tigers' 13 field goals in the opening stanza were from long range.
With the score tied at 77 with 2:10 to play after a 3-pointer by Alex North, the Ichabods called a timeout, the Tigers hit one of two free throws taking a one point lead.
The Tigers were whistled for a foul on the Ichabods' next possession but missed with 1:48 to play in the game and then FHSU called a timeout setting up their 15th 3-pointer of the night staking the Tigers to an 81-77 lead with 1:18 to play in the game. The Tigers tacked on a dunk on their next possession going up six at 83-77 with 1:04 to play.
Kyle Wiggins hit a pair of free throws with 59 seconds to play cutting the Tigers' lead to 83-79.
The Tigers missed both free throw attempts with 58 seconds to play, but Washburn came up empty on a 3-point attempt and after a foul sent the Tigers back to the line where they hit both free throws with 46 seconds to play going back up six at 85-79.
The Ichabods would get no closer as they would go the final 2:11 of the game without a field goal as the Tigers outscored Washburn 10-2 from that point on in the eight-point win.
Wiggins led the Ichabods with 17 points adding six rebounds. Alex North scored 13 followed by Jeremy Lickteig's 12 and Andy Wilson's 10 points. Algie Key dished out eight assists.
Jeremy Fleming led the Tigers with 22 points hitting 6 of 7 3-pointers and Ron Williams scored 15 going 5 of 8 from deep.
Washburn (13-15, 8-9 MIAA) finished 26 of 60 overall from the field hitting 12 of 29 shots from 3-point range. The Tigers (16-9, 9-7 MIAA) hit 26 field goals as well finishing with 15 3-pointers. 

 About Emporia State
•    Emporia State is 11-15 on the season, 4-13 in the MIAA.
•    The Hornets lost their fourth-straight game last time out in a 69-63 loss at Nebraska-Kearney last time out.
•    Terrence Moore is ranked third in the MIAA in scoring at 16.4 points per game. Josh Pederson leads the MIAA in free throw percentage at 90.9 on the year hitting 60 of 66 attempts.

 Series History with ESU
•      The meeting on Saturday will be the 207th meeting between these two schools and the Ichabods lead at 105-101. This is the most-played series for Washburn. Emporia State lists the all-time record tied at 102-102.
•      The Ichabods have won five of the last eight meetings in the series overall, but ESU has won the last two meetings. 
•      The two teams started the series in 1905-06, Washburn's first recorded year of basketball, and they have met every year since the 1945-46 season. 
•      This will be the 70th straight year they have played each other at least once. 
•      The Ichabods are 22-8 against the Hornets in Lee Arena. 
•      Washburn is 28-16 against ESU in MIAA games. 
•      Washburn is 4-1 against ESU in MIAA Postseason tournament games. 

 Last meeting with Emporia State
(Feb. 4, 2015) EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods fell behind by 18 points in the first half then rallied to tie the score with 10 seconds to play before ESU hit a 35-foot shot off the backboard at the buzzer for the heartbreaking 62-59 Washburn loss. 
The Ichabods (11-13, 6-7 MIAA) held the Hornets (11-11, 4-9 MIAA) without a field goal for the final 9:08 of the game until the winning before the winning heave by the Hornets. 
Washburn trailed 22-4 with 10:13 to play in the first half helped in part by a 12-0 start by the Hornets who held the Ichabods scoreless the first 5:34 of the game.
The Ichabods shot 9 of 24 in the first half overall while the Hornets shot 14 of 34 from the field in the frame.
To start the second half, the Ichabods used a 7-0 run to cut the Hornet lead to five with 16:51 to play in the game, but the Hornets responded with a 12-2 run of their own over the next 2:51 to push the lead back to 15 at 50-35 with 11:34 to play.
Washburn cut the lead back to eight with 7:50 to play after a pair of free throws by Algie Key as he scored six-straight points for the Ichabods over a 56-second time frame trimming the Hornet advantage to 52-44.
The Hornets went back up 11 with 7:21 to play halting the Ichabod run after an ESU player was fouled on a 3-point attempt at 55-44. 
After two more free throws by Key with 6:30 to play, the Ichabods trailed by nine at 55-46. Both teams came up scoreless on their next possessions, but a free throw by Kevin House with 5:04 cut the Ichabod deficit down to eight at 55-47.
Two free throws by Alex North with 4:26 pulled Washburn within six at 55-49. Washburn would go and cut the lead down to five after a 3-point play by Key with 2:58 to play at 57-52 and then to 57-53 after a free throw by North with 2:00 remaining.
A free throw by Kyle Wiggins with 1:40 trimmed the Hornet lead to three at 57-54 and after a timeout by Emporia State and a missed 3-pointer, Washburn went to the line with 29 seconds remaining and Key hit both free throws cutting the lead to 57-56.
The Ichabods fouled coming out of the timeout sending ESU to the line with 25 seconds as Terrence Moore hit both free throws pushing the lead back to three at 59-56.
Key hit one of two free throws with 20 seconds to play and the Ichabods fouled the Hornets with 10 seconds to play.
The Ichabods tied the score after an ESU miss but Jay Temaat hit a 3-pointer with one second left for the winner.
Key finished with 21 points to lead the Ichabods hitting 11 of 14 free throws and North and House each had 10. Korey Fisher had nine.
Temaat had 14 to lead the Hornets.
The Ichabods held the Hornets to seven field goals in the second half in 24 attempts and finished 21 of 58 overall. Washburn was 19 of 46 after going 10 of 22 in the second half.

 Last time out for Emporia State
(Feb. 18, 2015) Emporia State was outscored 24-6 from the free throw line in a 69-63 loss at Neb.-Kearney on Thursday in Kearney, Neb.  The Hornets led 50-49 with 10:17 left and the Lopers scored 12 of their final 20 points from the line.
Connor Beranek scored 14 points in a seven minute span to give the Lopers a 25-19 lead with 9:05 left in the first half.  Neb.-Kearney would lead 34-25 with 3:06 left in the period when the Hornets went on a 10-0 run to take a 35-34 lead with 46 seconds left on back to back three-pointers from Jevon Taylor.  Ethan Brozek scored with 14 seconds left to give UNK a 36-35 lead at the break.
Emporia State scored the first five points of the second half on a lay-up by Josh Pedersen and a three-pointer from Jay Temaat to take a 40-36 lead with 16:46 left.  A three off the fast break from Temaat following a steal by Tyler Jordan gave the Hornets a 46-41 lead with 13:16 left.  Brozek then scored six points in an 8-1 run to give the Lopers the lead at 49-47.  Temaat answered with another three to give Emporia State a 50-49 lead with 10:17 remaining.  The Lopers scored five of their next seven from the line while the Hornets only connected on one of two free throws to give UNK a 56-51 lead with 7:00 left.
Beranek hit two free throws with 4:48 left to give the Lopers a 60-53 lead when Temaat and Micah Swank hit back to back three-pointers to pull the Hornets within a point at 60-59 with 3:10 remaining.  Brozek and Pedersen traded buckets before Brozek scored an old-fashioned three-point play to give the Lopers a 65-61 lead.  Temaat had a chance to cut the lead to two but missed both free throws with 52.1 seconds left and Beranek hit four of four from the line in the final 19.9 seconds to ice the win.
Temaat hit four of six three-pointers to lead Emporia State with 12 points while Josh Pedersen and Jevon Taylor each scored 11 for the Hornets.
Emporia State will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Topeka to take on Washburn.  Tip-off for the Turnpike Tussle is set for 7:00 p.m. in Lee Arena.
